Mobile phone sales

The table provides the percentages of global market share of six mobile phone companies, in 2005 and in 2006.

Generally, the market share of the six companies has remained reasonably stable, with Nokia, Motorola and Samsung retaining the top three positions in the market.

The company with the highest market share, Nokia increased its share by 2.5% between 2005 and 2006, while conversely the company with the least market share, BenQ Mobile, decreased its market share by the same amount. This was a significant reduction in share for BenQ Mobile, as it represented over half of its total market share.

Combined, the top three companies dominated the market in both 2005 and 2006, increasing their combined share by 5% (from 62.9 to 67.9%). However, while both Nokia and Motorola increased their share of the market, Samsung experienced a slight decline in its share (0.9%)

Overall, the graph reveals that Nokia had the significantly largest share of the global phone market in both 2005 and 2006, with about 1/3 of the total market, and that the market was dominated by three companies, Nokia, Motorola and Samsung. (185)

Rail

rail transportation

The table displays information about the use of rail in four countries (UK, USA, Japan and Italy) in 2009.

Generally, the graph shows that UK and Italy used rail transport in a very similar way in 2009. In contrast, USA used trains largely for the carrying of freight, while in Japan the main use of trains was for the movement of people.

More specifically, in UK and Italy the passenger kilometres per head of population was about 775, whereas in Japan it was significantly higher, at 1980 kilometres. In contrast the number of USA was only 80.

In the USA however, 2820 billion tons of freight was transported by rail in 2009, whereas in the three other countries, this figure was between 21 and 24 billion tons.

To sum up, the table illustrates the dramatic difference in the way in which rail transportation was used in Japan and USA in 2009, with Japan using rail largely to move people and USA using it to move cargo.  (166)
