Abstract nouns

Abstract is an adjective that describes something that exists in thought or as an idea but does not having a physical or 'real' existence. So, for example, an abstract painting is one that does not represent a 'real' object.

An abstract noun is a noun that refers to an idea, quality, or state rather than a concrete object. Some examples include:

  • flexibility

  • aggressiveness

  • determination

  • love
