Form follows function

A basic design principle is that form follows function. This means that the function of a design (what it will be used for) is more important that the form of the design (how it looks - its appearance).

Both form and function are important but when we purchase something (e.g. a pen to write with, a laptop to browse the internet, a coat to keep us warm, a house to live in), we want it to perform its function well. If it doesn’t, we’re probably going to stop using it or ask for our money back, no matter how good it looks.

When designing a building, the most important factor is the intended use of the building rather than its outward appearance.
