A common IELTS Speaking task 2 topic is asking a student to speak about a favourite book or film. It is therefore important that you have a good understanding of a range of vocabulary typically used to describe books and movies.

Adapting a book into a film is always difficult. A typical film is only about two hours long, so the writer needs to consider which parts of the book to leave out and how to script the dialogue. There may need to be changes to the plot, and sometimes even different endings may be written to please producers and audiences. One film adaptation that did manage to be highly successful was ‘Apocalypse Now’.
'Apocalypse Now' is a 1979 American epic war film directed by Francis Ford Coppola. It has an all-star cast including Harrison Ford, and Dennis Hopper. The screenplay, co-written by Coppola and screenwriter John Milius, was loosely based on the book Heart of Darkness by the great author Joseph Conrad. The setting was changed from late 19th-century Congo to the Vietnam War and the film follows a river journey undertaken by the main character, Captain Benjamin L. Willard.
Initially set to be a five-month shoot, the filmmakers experienced many problems and filming took over a year. The film performed well at the box office, grossing over $150 million worldwide. Initial reviews were mixed; while the cinematography was widely acclaimed, several critics found Coppola's handling of the story's major themes to be anticlimactic and disappointing. 'Apocalypse Now' is today considered to be one of the greatest films ever made.
