head and heart

In a recent post, I wrote about the way in which westerners tend to think in dualities (= dividing things into two exclusive categories). Another duality we often use when we are speaking about actions and decisions is the division between the head and the heart.

  • The head = The brain. Thinking and planning. Being rational and systematic

  • The heart = Emotion. Feeling. Being irrational (acting without thinking)

So, when giving advice to people who need to make a decision, we will say, ''you should...

  • use your head = think carefully and analyse the situation and make a rational decision, or

  • follow you heart = do what you feel is the best and don't think about it.

Read the article about using your head or your heart and answer the following questions.

(a) ‘Leading with you head’ means:

  1. Acting quickly and decisively

  2. Assessing the advantages and disadvantages of a decision

  3. Thinking of the benefits for other people

(b) Quite often, we lead with our heads because situations are:

  1. Simple

  2. Exciting

  3. Risky

(c) 'Leading with our heart' means:

  1. We seek advice from other people

  2. We trust our feelings

  3. We think carefully about a decision

(d) People who are critical thinkers

  1. Should consider benefits and drawbacks of any decision

  2. Often make impulsive decisions

  3. Should be mindful of their bodily sensations when facing a decision

(e) When making important life decisions;

  1. It is best to seek advice from experts

  2. Most people lead with their hearts

  3. It is less risky to lead with your head

When you are ready, enter your answers in the sheet below.
