Myanmar Healthcare Volunteers

The populations of most countries around the world are becoming older (because older people are living longer and in many countries, the birth rate is dropping). This has meant a need for more products and services that cater for the elderly, in particular there has been a dramatic increases in the need for health services.

Watch, listen to, and read the subtitles in the video and answer the questions.

(a) Since 1990, the percentage of deaths in Myanmar from non communicable diseases such as heart disease, diabetes and cancer, have:

  1. more than doubled

  2. dropped dramatically

  3. risen significantly

(b) A large number of elderly Myanmar people:

  1. have non-communicable diseases

  2. are uneducated about non-communicable diseases

  3. are receiving treatment for non-communicable diseases

(c) Training is provided to volunteers, so they can:

  1. become educated about non-communicable diseases

  2. provide support to medical staff treating non-communicable diseases

  3. visit people in their homes and provide assistance

(d) Consumption of tobacco and betel nut chewing contribute to:

  1. high blood pressure

  2. oral cancer

  3. non-communicable diseases

(e) When tests uncover signs of oral cancer, hypertension or diabetes;

  1. patients are checked by the volunteers

  2. patients are sent to local clinics

  3. patients are referred to Yangon
