Parts of speech

I know some hard working civil servants have promotion examinations coming up at the end of May, so I will try and write a post everyday between now and the end of May to help you with some tips and some practice for the exam.

The first type of question that you can get in the exam is gapfill. In these types of questions, you are given a number of words and you need to put the right word in the right gap. For example:

Complete the paragraph with the words in the box (NOTE: there are two extra words)

A contract is a 1______________ binding promise made between at least two parties in order to fulfil an obligation in 2___________ for something of value. Contracts can either be 3__________, oral, or a combination of both. Contracts ensure that your interests are 4_____________by law and that both 5_________________ will fulfil their obligations as promised. If a party 6______________ the contract, there will be certain solutions available to the parties (known as 'remedies'). If the parties disagree on the 7_____________ of the contract or they are unclear, it will be up to a court to decide what those terms meant. The court will then have to look at how the services, promises, and exchanges were carried out in order to 8_________________ the parties' intentions. For a contract to be 9____________ , it must have four key 10________________: agreement, capacity, consideration, and intention.

To be able to do this type of questions quickly and correctly, you must be skilled at identifying:

  1. which part of speech a word is (e.g. noun, person, plural noun, adjective, adverb etc)

  2. which part of speech should go into a gap (e.g. number 10 above is a plural noun because it says four key ___________ )

Complete the test below and check your knowledge of parts of speech
