South Koreans missing in Nepal avalanche

An avalanche (n) = a mass of snow, ice, and rocks falling rapidly down a mountainside.

Avalanches are natural disasters that can be caused by many things. For example, new snow or rain can lead to a build up (= increase in amount) of snow which then loosens and falls down the side of a mountain. Earthquakes and the movement of animals have also been known to cause avalanches.
