Your 'true colours'
In English when we talk about someone's 'true colours' we are referring to their real personality. We call a person's real personality or feelings their 'true colours' because sometimes people pretend to be something they are not. For example, we may pretend to be happy, when we are sad.
Or we may not show our real personality (our true colours) because we are shy or afraid.
In this song, called 'True Colours' (which was originally recorded by Cindi Lauper in 1986), the singer is encouraging us to show our true colours because as they song says, our true colours are 'beautiful like a rainbow'.
In the first verse, the singer, sees the person is sad (sad eyes) and afraid (hard to take courage) because the world feels too busy and the person feels depressed (darkness inside you).
You with the sad eyes Don't be discouraged, oh I realize It's hard to take courage In a world full of people You can lose sight of it all The darkness inside you Can make you feel so small
In the second verse, the singer tells the person that they can see who they really are because they can see their 'true colours' and they are beautiful.
It is a beautiful song, which reminds us, that we are ALL beautiful.
This version of the song is sung and performed in two languages, English and sign. It is performed by a group of deaf people and they are called 'Artists Against Bullying'.
So, stay strong, stand firm, and never back down
Being yourself is the only way to act
I hope you enjoy the song :)
