Diabetes
Myanmar has one of the highest rates of diabetes in Southeast Asia and specialists are urging healthy diets and regular exercise to tackle the problem. Doctors believe that one of the main reasons for the increase in diabetes in Myanmar is a change in diet.
This is because many people, especially young people living in villages are moving to cities and their diets are changing. People have more cholesterol in their diet now. They are eating more fast food and drinking fizzy drinks. This is a major challenge for the Myanmar healthcare system.
As well as diet, exercise is also important in managing diabetes. A World Health Organisation (WHO) survey found that 16 percent of the population does not engage in the recommended amount of physical activity.
Diabetes is caused by our genes and the environment. We cannot control our genetic factors but we can change our environmental factors. Government and healthcare organisations can inform people that if they do not exercise, if they have a poor diet, if they continually drink fizzy drinks, then they will be more at risk of diabetes.
