Fields of law

Law is a system of rules created and enforced through social or governmental institutions to regulate behavior. State-enforced laws can be made by a group legislature or by a single legislator, resulting in statutes; by the executive through decrees and regulations; or established by judges through precedent, usually in common law.

Within law, there are many different fields, and each has its own specialised areas of interest and its own specialised vocabulary.

In this field of law the focus is on behaviors that are sanctioned under the criminal code and defined as illegal. Both prosecution and defense professionals deal with issues of individual liberty, basic rights, and responsibilities.

While relating to Intellectual Property Law, this area of law is more specifically centered on rights and media royalties issues in the arts, music, television, cinema, or athletics.

Legal professionals practicing in this field may represent government agencies, advocacy organizations, or individuals. They often focus on cases involving natural resource management, the curbing of pollution, or disputes about land and littoral use.

Lawyers in this field typically work in smaller firms and specialize in a variety of areas ranging from child welfare, through adoption, to divorce. Child abuse, legitimacy, domestic partnerships, and marriages are among the main aspects of these lawyers' practice.

This is the body of law which defines the role, powers, and structure of different entities within a state, namely, the executive, the legislature, and the judiciary; as well as the basic rights of citizens and, in federal countries, the relationship between the central government and state, provincial, or territorial governments.
