Learning about literature

I think in most countries, literature is taught in schools. I know in my school education in New Zealand, I was taught not only poems, stories and novels by and about New Zealand but also literature from other countries. I enjoyed studying literature and continued to do so when I went to university.

Some people believe that it is more important to teach children the literature of their own country than other countries. Do you agree or disagree?
