The photo is significant in that it captured the courage and ethos of the Flower Power movement at a time of national crisis and uncertainty in America. The photo was influential in the protest movements of the sixties and helped strengthen the political, cultural and social influence of the Flower Power movement.
The Flower Power movement began in California, USA in 1965, as a means of symbolic protest against the established leaders of the country. The term was coined by American poet, Allen Ginsberg when he promoted the use of "masses of flowers" to hand to policemen, press, politicians and spectators to civilly fight violence with peace. The use of non-violent objects such as toys, flags, candy and music were intended to show that the movement was not associated with anger or violence.
In the 1960s and 1970s, many American young people embraced the symbolism by dressing in clothing with embroidered flowers and vibrant colors, wearing flowers in their hair, and distributing flowers to the public. These people became known as ‘flower children’ or ‘hippies’.
In January 1967, as many as 100,000 young Westerners from all over the world travelled to San Francisco for the ‘Summer of Love’. The Summer of Love became a watershed event in the development of a worldwide counterculture based on values of love and peace. Newly recruited hippies returned home at the end of the summer, taking with them the new values, styles, ideas, and behaviors and introducing them into all major cities in the Western world.
