Humble and kind

Absolutely fabulous song by country star, Tim McGraw. Full of great language, especially metaphors and idioms.

I first heard this song a few months ago. This is dhamma. The lyrics of this song describe a number of ethics or morals for living a good life.

For example, the chorus (= the part of the song that is repeated) contains the line ''always stay humble and kind''. You all know what 'kind' means, and to 'be humble' means to always understand that you are like everyone else, even if you are very successful, or very rich, or very powerful.

But this video is not just about the music, there are also over 50 beautiful pictures of people of all ages, from all religions, faiths and ethnic groups. People who speak different languages, live in different countries and worship different gods. People who walk and people who ride. People who are all different. It doesn't matter. The dhamma is for all.

There are a number of lines in this song that use metaphors to describe ethical behavior, for example:

Don't steal, don't cheat and don't lie = be honest

Match these lines in the song with the ethical behaviour below:

  1. Don't forget the key's under the mat =

  2. Go to church 'cause your momma says to =

  3. Hold the door, say please, say thank you =

  4. Don't expect a free ride from no one =

  5. Don't hold a grudge or a chip =

  6. Don't take for granted the love this life gives you =

  7. Don't forget, turn back around and help the next one in line =

A. Respect you parents and elders

B. Share your success and your merit

C. Appreciate those that love you

D. Always let go of anger

E. Be polite

F. Be welcoming and hospitable

G. Always work hard yourself
