The problem of illiteracy
Illiteracy is the opposite of literacy.
Literacy refers to being able to read and write.
Illiteracy means being unable to read and write.
So, when measuring the quality of life in countries, a high literacy rate is seen as positive whereas a high rate of illiteracy is considered to be a bad thing.
Illiteracy has traditionally been viewed as largely a problem for developing countries.
However it is becoming apparent that in countries such as the USA and Australia, illiteracy is on the increase. Discuss possible causes for this and its effect on society.
