Map: University Sports Centre

Sometimes in IELTS Writing Part 1, you will be required to write a report detailing changes to plans or maps.

One of the first things you need to do, is identify the dates of the plans or maps.

  • If both of the plans and maps are in the past (e.g. 2000 and 2010) then you will be using the past simple passive tense in your report (e.g. ' a sports hall was added').

  • If one of the maps is in the past and the other is the present (e.g. 2000 and 'now') then you will be using the present perfect passive tense in your report (e.g. 'a sports hall has been added').

  • If one of the maps in the future then you will be using the future passive in your report (e.g. 'in the future, a sports hall will be added' ) or the infinitive passive (e.g. 'in the future, a sports hall is planned to be added').

The diagram above shows planned changes to a university sports centre.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
