Speak on the topic

Watch this video of a woman doing the IELTS speaking test. She was given a score of 6.

Speaking Part 1

  • The woman speaks clearly and with good pronunciation and intonation

  • She gives good two sentence answers

  • She uses some good vocabulary (e.g. 'actually', 'look after', 'at the moment')

Speaking Part 2

  • Speaks clearly with good pronunciation

  • Does not speak directly on topic (e.g. what is her hobby?)

  • Does not use past tense (e.g. 'go', 'catch', 'is')

  • Uses a good range of vocabulary (e.g. 'freedom', 'alone', 'neighbourhood')

  • Loses structure near the end of her speaking

Speaking Part 3

  • She does not use past tense correctly

  • Uses good informal language (e.g. 'switch off', 'around the house')

  • Uses some very good vocabulary (e.g. 'refresh', 'clear mind')

  • She often does not speak on topic and answer the question

  • She does not structure her answers

  • Her answers are often too short

So, the woman does not score well in Speaking Part 3 because often her answers are not on the topic and are too short. Because her answers are short she is asked a total of eleven questions in Part 3. This is a lot.

So, some important tips for Speaking Part 3:

  1. Try and give answers of about 90 seconds to each Part 3 question.

  2. Listen carefully to each questions and make sure your answer is on the topic

  3. Structure your answers

Listen to the examination and make a note of the questions the examiner asks in Part 3. This will help you in your own preparation for the Speaking test.

When you have listened and completed your notes, identify the questions that were asked in the form below.
