Where you are

I love animated movies, and I've always loved Disney movies, which have been around since I was a kid. I grew up watching movies about Donald Duck, Mickey Mouse and other Disney characters. Disney movies have come a long way since then and one of my favourite recent Disney movies is 'Moana'. I like this movie partly because it is set in the Pacific Ocean, where I come from. New Zealand is the largest island in the Pacific Ocean.

1. Watch, listen and read the subtitles of the video from 'Moana' above.

Moana's home (the village of Motunui) is typical of a 'we' (collectivist) society. It is focused on the group ('we share everything we make') and emphasises the team spirit ('I'll have my people to guide me, we'll build our future together'). There is no reason for anyone to leave as the group or collective (the village) provides 'all we need''.

2. Read the Moana plot summary below and then complete the vocabulary activity. You can use dictionaries if you need to.

Plot Summary Maui, a muscular, tattooed demigod, steals the mystical heart of goddess Te Fiti. The heart is a small luminous stone which has the power to create life. As he flees the island with the stone, he is attacked by a lava monster, Te Ka, causing the stone to fall from his hand and disappear into the ocean.

Centuries later, Moana, the teenage princess of a small island in Polynesia, who has a special connection with the ocean, learns from her kooky grandmother Tala, that she has been chosen to find Maui and restore the heart of Te Fiti.

Along with her pet chicken HeiHei, Moana sets out on the ocean to search for Maui. When she finds him, she realizes that he’s extremely self centered and egomaniac. Nevertheless, Maui and Moana form a special bond; she teaches him to think about others and be generous, and he teaches her how to navigate the waters and protects her from all the troubles along the way.
