The Ring of Fire

On 9 December 2019, the volcano on White Island in New Zealand erupted killing 21 tourists. In February 2011, a magnitude 6.3 earthquake caused severe damage in Christchurch in New Zealand, killing 185 people.

New Zealand is one of several countries, including Japan and parts of USA which is on the Ring of Fire. The Ring of Fire is the area that surrounds the Pacific Ocean and is the area in the world that is most likely to suffer earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and tsunamis.


Watch the video to learn about the Ring of Fire. Before you watch the video, look at the nine statements below and identify the keywords that will help you in listening to the video (I have underlined the keywords in Question 1).
