Urbanisation is the increase in the proportion of people living in towns and cities.
Urban migration is the movement of people within a country from the countryside to the towns and cities.
Urbanisation occurs because of urban migration , that is people move from rural areas (countryside) to urban areas (towns and cities). Urbanisation has been happening for centuries all over the world and has become more prevalent (= widespread) under globalisation. As the graph above shows, urbanisation has been dramatic in China in the last 15 years, and now in 2020, over 60% of Chinese people are living in urban areas.
